My introduction to Qi Gong began quite accidentally when I kept a good friend at a seminar in late 2001. I was intrigued but considered myself a committed yoga practitioner. That weekend I dreamt of being the teacher's student in a different time and place. This drew me to look more closely, indeed, to observe with rapt attention. That is when I noted the energy swirling as he cleared and energized water, demonstrated Qi Gong exercises and Tai Chi forms and as he did healing work.
A key tenet of Taoist practice is that we not only develop our physical bodies (Ming) but also cultivate and cleanse our mental and emotional “bodies” (Xing) to achieve immortality or enlightenment. We process and refine our emotional state and our physical state; indeed the two must continue apace. My Shi Fu, Master Yun Xiang Tseng (Master Chen), teaches a five step meditation for opening the micro cosmic orbit that demonstrates this. (Meditation is part of physical cultivation).
